This 8-month, high-impact program accelerates the growth of BIPOC, mid-level leaders through:
MIAZS is pleased to partner with Leadby with generous sponsorship from Canopy Strategic Partners and TKM Foundation to present AMLAZ, a professional development opportunity for MIAZS Members who manage or lead at least one direct report at their institution.
AMLAZ takes place February through September and requires a commitment of roughly 8-10 hours a month from participants, who are expected to actively practice and apply their new knowledge and skills in their day-to-day responsibilities of managing and leading others.
Applications for AMLAZ open every fall in September/October. Applicants must have support of their direct supervisor, who must also complete a short questionnaire in order for the applicant to be considered.
Some sponsored spots may be available for applicants in need. The cost of participating in AMLAZ is $3,500. Institutions are encouraged to invest in their leaders' development by covering the cost of AMLAZ.

MIAZS is thrilled to launch our 4th year of the Advancing Minority Leadership in Aquariums & Zoos (AMLAZ) Program, in partnership with Leadby.
This eight-month, high-impact program accelerates the growth of BIPOC mid-level leaders through:

- One-on-one coaching
- Management skills course
- A meaningful project for your organization

Duration:
Eight (8) months: February-September 2027
Requirements:
+ Management of one or more individuals as part of your current role
+ Support of your direct supervisor
+ MIAZS membership*
+ Commitment to personal and professional development
Expectations:
+ Attendance at all meetings (limited exceptions may be allowed)
+ Full engagement in group discussions, coaching sessions, and independent work
+ Application of new knowledge and skills to your current role
+ Project completion, including a final presentation
Deadline to apply:
11:59pm PT, Saturday, October 31st, 2026
Both applicant and supervisor forms are due by this date
Cost:
$3,500 per participant (some sponsorships available)
Funding available!
Some applicants may be awarded full funding to participate in AMLAZ 2027 through generous sponsorships.
Zoos and aquariums may also fund their own leaders to participate. Payment will be made directly to Leadby following applicant acceptance into the program.
